Nitrate/Nitrite in Drinking Water Fact Sheet

Michigan Nitrate Map

Some areas of Michigan have been found to have higher nitrate levels in groundwater. Nitrate and nitrite may be more common in shallow wells near agricultural areas, golf courses or areas where high levels of fertilizers and pesticides are used.  Nitrates cause something called Methemoglobinemia or “Blue Baby Syndrome” and it is suspected to be the number one leading cause of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in babies.  Nitrates prevent the red blood cells from carrying oxygen to the body, especially in those with weakened cardiovascular systems such as babies.  But, the good news is that they are pretty easy to remove, even for the whole house, though it mostly a drinking water issue so many people opt for a point of use solution like reverse osmosis.

Regardless of whether you want to address is for the whole house or at one or two locations, Yellow Duck Water Solutions can help.  We can test for Nitrates and offer several options for treatment without a big scare tactic magic show.

Learn more about your county’s groundwater nitrate levels by viewing the EGLE Water Quality Map for Nitrate.

Contaminant levels may vary depending on where you live within your county. To find out more about groundwater nitrate in your area, contact your local health department.
